What's Changed for Digital Marketing Courses in 2027
Most "best course" lists get a new year in the title and nothing else. Here's what's actually different going into 2027, and why it matters when you choose.
1. Free TAFE is now permanent
The federal government has made Free TAFE a permanent part of the vocational training system under the Free TAFE Act 2025, with at least 100,000 Free TAFE and VET places a year from 2027, according to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. Places are tied to priority areas and eligibility rules set with each state, so a marketing diploma isn't automatically free. If a recognised qualification is your goal, check your state's Free TAFE list before you pay anyone, including us.
2. TAFE and university prices have risen
When we last checked these providers in mid-2026, the TAFE Queensland diploma was $5,535 and the UTS Graduate Certificate was $17,576. In November 2026 they're $5,740 and $18,370. That's a 3.7% and 4.5% rise in a few months. The self-paced options in this guide, ours included, held their prices.
3. Google has rebuilt its free training around AI
Google launched Google Skills in October 2025, bringing close to 3,000 courses, labs and certificates from Google Cloud, DeepMind and Google for Education into one place, as Allwork reported at launch. The marketing-specific certificates still live in Skillshop. The upshot: free Google training is now more AI and product focused, which makes it a better supplement and a weaker stand-alone marketing course.
4. The money has kept moving to search and video
Australian internet advertising grew 11.5% to $18.4 billion in 2025, with search at $8 billion and video up 19.8% to $5.4 billion, or 29% of all online ad spend, according to the IAB Australia report covered by B&T. A 2027 course that's light on Google Search, short-form video and measurement is teaching last decade's mix.
5. More businesses are competing for the same customers
There were 2,814,778 actively trading businesses in Australia at 30 June 2026, up 3.1% in a year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. More businesses means more demand for people who can do the marketing, and more competition for anyone marketing their own business. Practical skills you can use in week one count for more than ever.
Our 2027 Price Check: What Each Hour of Learning Costs
Headline prices hide a lot. One fair way to compare courses is what you pay per hour of guided learning, using each provider's own stated hours. This is our own calculation from published figures.
| Course | Price | Stated learning time | About per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 Minute Marketing Essentials | $499 | About 18 hours | $28 |
| 20 Minute Marketing Deluxe | $799 | About 33 hours | $24 |
| 20 Minute Marketing Expert | $999 | About 52 hours | $19 |
| RMIT Online DMK101 | $1,900 | 48 to 60 hours (6 weeks at 8 to 10 hours) | $32 to $40 |
Diplomas, bootcamps and postgraduate study don't publish comparable hours, and they include assessment and accreditation, so they're left out of this table rather than compared unfairly.
The Best Digital Marketing Courses for 2027, Ranked
1. 20 Minute Marketing: best overall for most learners
Our courses are built for people who have a job, a business or study already taking up the day. Every lesson is about 20 minutes, the price is paid once, and you get 12 months access, tutor support, a student community, a Certificate of Completion and a 30 day money-back guarantee. Lessons use Australian examples, Australian platforms and Australian rules (Spam Act, Privacy Act, ACCC advertising guidance), and each course ends with practice briefs you can show an employer or a client.
Where it falls short: no live classes and it's not nationally recognised training.
2. RMIT Online DMK101: best for a university brand
Six weeks, $1,900, and the RMIT name. It's strategy-led rather than hands-on, so you'll learn how to plan a campaign more than how to build one. Good if your employer is paying and wants a university short course.
3. Academy Xi: best for mentor support
Academy Xi's Advanced Certificate is $8,999 for 24 weeks with 1:1 mentor sessions and career support. You pay for the people, not the content. Worth it if accountability is what's stopped you finishing courses before.
4. A Diploma of Marketing and Communication: best if you need a qualification
The diploma (BSB50620) is nationally recognised. Monarch Institute is $3,550 online, TAFE Queensland is $5,740 at full fee, and Free TAFE or state subsidies can bring the cost down if you're eligible. Accredited courses move slowly though, so expect less on AI tools and the latest platform changes. We explain why in why accredited courses lag the platforms.
5. Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy: best free starting point
Free, quick and good for a certificate on LinkedIn. Each teaches one company's tools, so on their own they won't show you how SEO, ads, email and social fit together. Use them alongside a structured course. Our Google free training vs paid courses comparison goes through the trade-off.
Which 2027 Course Fits Your Goal?
- "I want to try digital marketing before I commit." Start free with Skillshop or HubSpot, or spend $79 on one short course.
- "I want to change careers in 2027." A full self-paced course (20 Minute Marketing's Deluxe or Expert), plus free platform certificates and a small portfolio. Our career change guide maps it out.
- "I run a business and I'm sick of paying an agency." 20 Minute Marketing's Deluxe, then one short course on your biggest channel. See what to learn first for your own business.
- "I need a recognised qualification." A BSB50620 diploma, checked against your state's Free TAFE list first.
- "My employer is paying." RMIT Online or a diploma tends to be easier to get approved. A self-paced course is easier to finish. 20 Minute Marketing's courses can be done in a 30 minute block in your calendar, keeping your employer happy.
What a 2027 Digital Marketing Course Should Cover
Whatever you choose, check the course covers these, because they're where the work and the money are in 2027:
- Google Search and Google Ads. Search is still the biggest slice of Australian online ad spend.
- SEO for AI answers. Getting cited in Google's AI Overviews and AI assistants, not just ranking a blue link. Our guide to answer engine optimisation explains the shift.
- Short-form video and social. Video is the fastest-growing ad format.
- Email and owned audiences. The channel you control when platform costs rise.
- Using AI tools properly. Prompting, checking and editing, not just generating. See our AI marketing courses comparison.
- Measurement. GA4 and Search Console, so you know what's working.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best digital marketing course in Australia for 2027?
For most people, 20 Minute Marketing: self-paced online, paid once (Essentials $499, Deluxe $799, Expert $999, short courses from $79), with 12 months access and a 30 day money-back guarantee. RMIT Online ($1,900) suits people who want a university brand, Academy Xi suits people who want mentor support, and a BSB50620 diploma (from $3,550 online) suits anyone who needs a nationally recognised qualification.
Is there a free digital marketing course in Australia in 2027?
Yes. Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy are free and give you platform certificates but they are limited to just their products and not rounded enough for real knowledge. Free TAFE is permanent from 2027, with at least 100,000 places a year, but which courses are fee-free depends on your state and eligibility, so check your state's list.
How much does a digital marketing course cost in Australia in 2027?
From free to over $18,000. Self-paced courses like 20 Minute Marketings run $79 to $999 with us, RMIT Online's short course is $1,900, diplomas run $3,550 to $8,760, the Academy Xi Advanced Certificate is $8,999 and the UTS Graduate Certificate is $18,370, based on prices checked in November 2026.
When do digital marketing courses start in 2027?
Self-paced courses, including ours, start the day you enrol. RMIT Online's DMK101 starts 18 January, 15 March and 10 May 2027, TAFE Queensland's online diploma lists 12 April 2027, and UTS Online has six intakes across 2027.
Is 20 Minute Marketing accredited?
No. 20 Minute Marketing is not a registered training organisation, and its courses are not nationally recognised training. It's a considered choice as the registration process is expensive which would have to be passed on to you, and the course material can't be modernised as fast as required. If you need a formal qualification, a Diploma of Marketing and Communication (BSB50620) is the right choice.
Can I claim a digital marketing course on tax?
Often, if the course is connected to the work you currently earn income from. The ATO's self-education rules generally don't cover study for a new career. This is general information, not tax advice, so check with your accountant.
