How to Get Handyman Jobs in Australia (2026)
Oct 03, 2026
Most handyman jobs in Australia come from Google search and Maps, Airtasker and other lead sites, word of mouth and repeat customers. Set up your Google Business Profile with the Handyman category, reply to every enquiry fast, and ask for a review after each visit. Then bundle small jobs into one visit so each trip is worth it.
Handyman marketing is a volume game. Most jobs are small: a door that sticks, a few shelves, a dripping tap, a fence paling, a list of odd jobs nobody has had time for. That changes what works. Customers often contact several people at once and book whoever replies first, and a single small job can cost you more in travel than it earns. The handymen who do well respond quickly, make every visit count, and turn one off customers into regulars. This guide covers where handyman leads come from, the free setup that matters, where paid ads fit, and how to use Airtasker and other lead sites without depending on them.
Where handyman leads come from in Australia
If you are wondering how to get handyman jobs, they mostly come through four doors.
- Google search and Maps. "Handyman near me" or "handyman" plus a suburb, often from someone with a list of small jobs and no idea which trade to call.
- Lead sites. Airtasker is a big source of small jobs, and hipages and ServiceSeeking carry handyman work too. They are quick to start with, but you compete with other people on the same task, often on price.
- Word of mouth. Neighbours, friends, community groups and local Facebook groups. Handyman work is personal, and people like to hire someone a friend trusts.
- Repeat customers and property managers. A household that likes your work will call you again next time something breaks. Property managers, landlords and strata managers have a steady stream of small maintenance jobs.

Google Business Profile for handymen
Your free Google Business Profile is what puts you in the map results when someone nearby searches for help. For a local service like handyman work it is usually the best free listing you can have.
Choose the right primary category. The category to use is Handyman/Handywoman/Handyperson, which is how it appears in Google's business category list as tracked by PlePer's category tool (checked 3 October 2026). Add secondary categories only for work you genuinely do, and confirm the wording in the category picker inside your profile.
List your services in detail. Customers search for the job, not the trade. Add the specific services you offer, such as furniture assembly, picture and TV hanging, door and lock repairs, minor carpentry, patching and painting, gutter cleaning and flat pack assembly. Rules on which work needs a licence differ between states, so only list work you are allowed to do where you operate, and check with your state's building or fair trading regulator if you are unsure.
Set a tight service area. Because jobs are small, travel time eats your margin. List the suburbs close to you rather than a whole city, so the enquiries you get are worth driving to.
Photos and reviews. Add before and after photos of real jobs, and a clear photo of you and your vehicle so customers know who is coming to their home. Ask for a review at the end of every visit, by text with a direct link. Reviews that mention punctuality, tidiness and being easy to deal with matter most for handyman work, because the customer is letting you into their house. Google Ads and Local Services Ads
Local Services Ads are Google's pay per lead ads that can appear at the top of results with a verification badge, which Google now calls Google Verified. We checked Google's own Local Services Ads help pages for Australia on 3 October 2026 and could not confirm from Google's category list whether handyman services are an eligible category here. So check whether your trade is eligible by starting the sign up in your Google Ads or Local Services account and seeing what is offered for your area. Google is also moving Local Services Ads management into Google Ads, so the process may look different over time.
Standard Google Ads are available to any handyman and charge per click. Because each job is small, you need to be careful with spend:
- Target specific, higher value services such as "TV wall mounting" or "door repairs" in your suburbs, rather than broad terms alone.
- Keep your area tight so you are not paying for clicks from people you would not drive to.
- Add negative keywords for job seekers and DIY searches, such as "jobs", "hiring", "how to" and "tools".
- Only run ads at times you can answer the phone or reply quickly, because speed decides who gets the job.

The handyman angle: speed, Airtasker and bundling
Response speed wins small jobs. With small jobs, customers rarely wait for the perfect quote. They message a few people and book whoever replies first with a clear answer. A few habits make you faster:
- Turn on notifications for your Google Business Profile messages and calls, and reply within the hour when you can.
- Keep saved replies on your phone for common questions: your call out approach, which areas you cover, and when you are next available.
- Ask for photos of the job up front, so you can give a clear answer without a site visit for simple work.
- If you cannot take the job, say so quickly and politely. People remember that, and they come back.
Use Airtasker deliberately. Airtasker suits handyman work well because so many tasks are small and specific. It is a good way to build a base of customers when you start out, or to fill gaps in your week. The trade off is that tasks are open to many people, so price competition is strong and the platform controls the relationship. Our honest look at whether Airtasker is worth it for tradies walks through how it works and what to use alongside it.
Bundle small jobs into one visit. One small job is often not worth the drive. Five small jobs at the same house usually are. Make bundling part of how you sell:
- When someone books one job, ask: "Is there anything else on your list while I am there?" Most people have a few.
- Offer a set block of time, such as a half day visit, that the customer fills with their own list of jobs.
- Group jobs by suburb and fill your days area by area, so you spend more time working and less time driving.
- Write up a short list of anything else you notice that needs attention, and offer to book it in.
Turn one off customers into regulars. Keep a record of who you have worked for. With their consent, a short message a few months later asking if anything else needs doing can fill a quiet week. The ACMA guidance on avoiding spam (checked 3 October 2026) says marketing messages need consent, must identify your business, and must include an unsubscribe option, so ask at the end of the job whether they are happy to hear from you.
You do not need an agency to run any of this. Our tradies course walks through the Google profile, reviews, ads and follow up step by step, in short lessons that fit around the working day.
Lead sites: use them, then rely on them less
Airtasker, hipages and ServiceSeeking can all bring in handyman work, especially when you are starting from nothing. They need no website and little setup, so they are a reasonable way to get going.
The catch is that you are building the platform's asset, not your own. You usually compete with others for the same task, the reviews you earn stay on the platform, and the customer may book someone else next time through the same app. Platforms also change: Oneflare, once a familiar option for Australian tradies, has closed.
If you also use hipages, our breakdown of alternatives to renting leads from hipages sets out the options.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get more handyman jobs?
Set up a complete Google Business Profile with the Handyman category and a detailed list of services, reply to enquiries quickly, and ask every customer for a review. Bundle small jobs into longer visits, keep in touch with past customers with their consent, and use lead sites such as Airtasker to fill gaps rather than as your only source of work.
What is the best Google Business Profile category for a handyman?
The category is Handyman/Handywoman/Handyperson. Add your individual services inside the profile, because customers often search for the specific job rather than the trade. Check the wording in the category picker in your profile.
Is Airtasker good for handyman work?
It can be, especially when you are building a customer base or filling a quiet week, because many tasks are small and specific. Competition and price pressure are strong, though, and the platform holds the customer relationship. Use it alongside your own Google profile and repeat customers.
How do I make small handyman jobs worth the trip?
Ask every customer if there is anything else on their list, offer set blocks of time such as a half day visit, and group jobs by suburb so you drive less. Several small jobs at one address usually make a much better visit than one.
Can handymen use Google Local Services Ads in Australia?
We could not confirm handyman services as an eligible Local Services Ads category in Australia from Google's own pages when we checked on 3 October 2026. Check whether your trade is eligible by starting the sign up in your account. Standard Google Ads are available in the meantime.
