Best SEO Courses in Australia 2026: An Honest Comparison

course comparison digital marketing course search engine optimisation Sep 17, 2026

The short answer

There is no single best SEO course in Australia, because the people searching for one want three different things. If you want a credential for your resume, an accredited provider like AIM, Upskilled or Monarch Institute is the right call, at $645 to $1,150. If you want to learn the theory thoroughly and for free, Semrush Academy and HubSpot Academy are genuinely good. If you are a small business owner who wants your own business ranking on Google and does not care about a certificate, you want a practical, Australian, self-paced course, which is the gap most of the market leaves open.

Search "SEO course" in Australia and you get a strange mix: two American universities, three Australian training providers, four free vendor academies and a Reddit thread. They are not competing for the same person, but nobody tells you that, so it is genuinely hard to work out which one is for you.

We teach an SEO course ourselves, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be straight about where other options beat ours, because a comparison that only flatters the author is not worth reading. Every price below was checked in September 2026 and course providers change them, so confirm before you buy.

First, work out which of the three you are

Almost everyone looking for an SEO course falls into one of these. Pick yours before you compare anything, because it eliminates most of the list immediately.

  • The career builder. You want SEO on your resume or you are moving into a marketing role. You need a recognised name and a certificate. Budget matters less than credibility.
  • The curious learner. You want to understand how search works, you are not in a hurry, and you would rather not pay. Free is genuinely fine for you.
  • The business owner. You have a business that is not showing up on Google and you want to fix it yourself. You do not need a certificate. You need the specific steps, in the right order, for the Australian market.
Worth knowing: most SEO courses in Australia are written for the career builder. They include job pathway content, assessment and certification, because that is what their business model rewards. If you are a business owner, you will pay for a fair bit of material you will never use.

The Australian providers

AIM, around $1,150

The Australian Institute of Management runs a one day SEO strategy and implementation short course. It is the most recognised name of the Australian options, it comes with a certificate and a digital badge, and it is delivered by named facilitators. It currently sits at the top of the Google Australia results for "SEO course".

Choose it if you want an employer to recognise the name. Skip it if you are a business owner: you will spend over a thousand dollars and one full working day, and you will still go home and do your own SEO on Monday.

Upskilled, around $770

An online SEO certification course delivered in partnership with Simplilearn, with twelve months of access and eight modules. Cheaper than AIM, self paced, and it comes with a credential.

Choose it if you want a certificate without taking a day off work. Skip it if you want proof it works: there are no student ratings, review counts or testimonials published on the course page, which makes it hard to judge before you pay.

Monarch Institute, around $645

About eleven hours of online content, delivered with the Digital Marketing Institute and taught by a named trainer. Monarch is upfront that this particular course is non-accredited, which is more honest than most.

Choose it if you want a structured introduction with a real person attached to it. Skip it if you were paying for the accreditation, because this one does not carry it.

CCE, University of Sydney, around $560

Eight hours, face to face, in Sydney. The only option on this list where you can put your hand up and ask a question in a room.

Choose it if you learn best in person and you are in Sydney. Skip it if you are anywhere else in the country, or if you will need to revisit the material later, because a one off workshop leaves you with notes rather than a library.

The global platforms

Coursera, UC Davis SEO Specialization

Five courses, a capstone project, and a genuinely enormous amount of social proof: a 4.6 star average from well over ten thousand reviews, and more than a quarter of a million enrolments. On depth and credibility, nothing else on this list is close.

Choose it if you want to understand SEO properly and you have the hours. Skip it if you need Australian specifics: it is a United States university course, and you will be translating examples.

Semrush Academy and HubSpot Academy, free

Both are genuinely good and genuinely free, with certificates. HubSpot's newer answer engine material is one of the few places covering AI search properly.

Choose them if your budget is zero, and honestly, start here regardless. The catch: each teaches SEO through the lens of the product it would like you to buy, and neither will tell you which of the fifty things you just learned actually matter for a six person business in Ballarat. Free courses are good at teaching everything. They are poor at telling you what to ignore.

Where ours fits, and where it does not

Our SEO course is $149 once, eighteen lessons of about twenty minutes each. It is built for the third person on that list: an Australian small business owner who wants their own business found on Google, and a student who wants to know the basics and then a little bit more. It gives practical advice that is more modern than most TAFE OR university syllabus.

What that means in practice: local SEO built around Australian suburbs and the searches your customers really type, Google Business Profile set up for an Australian service area business, Australian directory and citation sources rather than United States ones, and Australian dollars with no currency surprise at the checkout. It also covers AI and answer engine optimisation, which most of the accredited options have not caught up with yet.

Do not buy ours if you want a credential for a job application. We are not an RTO and we do not pretend to be. If SEO on your resume is the goal, AIM or Upskilled will serve you better and we would rather say so now. Do not buy ours if your budget is genuinely zero either: go and do the Semrush and HubSpot courses first, they are free and they are good.

The comparison nobody makes: the real alternative for most business owners is not another course. It is hiring an agency. A single month of an SEO retainer costs more than any course on this list, and at the end of that month the knowledge still lives with the agency rather than with you.

How to choose in five minutes

  • Need it on a resume? AIM if budget allows, Upskilled if not.
  • Budget is zero? Semrush Academy, then HubSpot Academy.
  • Want depth and have the time? Coursera.
  • In Sydney and want a classroom? CCE.
  • Australians who wants results rather than a certificate? Ours, or any practical self paced course that uses Australian examples.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best SEO course in Australia?

It depends which of three people you are. For a recognised credential, AIM is the best known Australian option at around $1,150. For free, thorough theory, Semrush Academy and HubSpot Academy are both strong. For an Australian who wants their own site ranking, a practical self paced course with Australian examples will serve you better than any of them, because the accredited courses are built for people entering the marketing profession.

How much does an SEO course cost in Australia?

As at September 2026, Australian SEO short courses run from about $560 for an eight hour workshop up to about $1,150 for a one day course with a recognised provider. Self paced online courses sit lower, from around $149 like ours. Vendor academies such as Semrush and HubSpot are free. Prices change, so confirm on the provider's own page before you buy.

Are SEO courses in Australia accredited?

Mostly not, and this trips people up. Several are delivered by registered training organisations, which is a credential for the provider rather than nationally recognised accreditation for the course itself. Monarch Institute states plainly that its SEO short course is non-accredited. If accreditation matters to you, ask the provider directly whether the specific course is nationally recognised, not whether the organisation is an RTO.

Is an SEO course worth it for a small business?

If you have a website that is not bringing in enquiries, yes, because the alternative is usually an agency retainer that costs more in one month than a course costs once. The value is not the certificate, it is that the skill stays with you. SEO is also slow: expect three to six months before the work shows up in your rankings, so buy a course only if you will actually do the work.

How long does it take to learn SEO?

You can learn the fundamentals in six to ten hours, which is what most short courses run to. Getting comfortable enough to run your own SEO takes a few months of applying it. Seeing the results in Google takes three to six months after that, because search engines are slow to trust changes. Anyone promising rankings in weeks is selling something.

Can I learn SEO for free instead?

Yes. Semrush Academy, HubSpot Academy, Yoast Academy and Google's own Search Essentials documentation are all free and all good. The limitation is not quality, it is curation: free material teaches you everything without telling you what matters for a business your size, in your market. A paid course is mostly buying you a shorter path, not better information.
