Digital marketing course vs a TAFE diploma: an honest comparison

What a TAFE or RTO qualification gives you, what it costs, and when a self paced course is the better fit.

Compare: All comparisons | vs TAFE or RTO diploma | vs bootcamps | vs free certificates

Quick answer: Choose a TAFE or RTO course if you need a nationally recognised qualification, a VET Student Loan or scheduled classes. Choose 20 Minute Marketing if you want current, practical digital skills, a portfolio and self paced study from $499. Subsidised TAFE can cost only a little more than us, so compare content and flexibility, not only price.

Most TAFE and RTO fees depend on your state, your eligibility for a subsidy and the electives you choose. Several providers do not publish a fee at all. Use each provider's fee calculator for your own situation.

What a TAFE or RTO course does better

  • A nationally recognised qualification. Every TAFE and RTO course in the table above ends in an AQF qualification. We do not offer one and will not pretend to. If a job ad asks for a Certificate IV or a Diploma, this settles it.
  • VET Student Loans. TAFE Queensland and Melbourne Polytechnic say eligible students can use a VET Student Loan, so you can start without paying upfront [4] [5].
  • Subsidised prices are close to ours. A concession student at North Metropolitan TAFE in Western Australia pays $634.90 for the Certificate IV core units, not far above our Essentials course at $499 [1]. If you qualify for a subsidy, price alone is not a strong reason to choose us.
  • A teacher and a timetable. TAFE Queensland runs two live evening classes a week and Melbourne Polytechnic runs classes three days a week [4] [5]. If you work better with a fixed schedule and a class to keep up with, that structure is valuable.

Where 20 Minute Marketing is different

What the curriculum guarantees. The national Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication has had one release, dated 19 October 2020 [6]. None of the five core units of the Diploma of Marketing and Communication covers a digital or online channel, so digital content depends on the electives a provider offers [7]. The body responsible for these qualifications lists no review of either in its current development plan [8]. A good teacher can still cover new platforms, so this is about what the qualification guarantees, not what any teacher covers. We explain the process in full in why accredited courses lag the platforms.

Practical, channel by channel lessons. Our courses teach SEO, Google Ads, social media, email and SMS, websites and AI tools as hands on skills, and each course ends with a practice brief that produces something you can show an employer or a client.

No intake dates. You can start today, study in 20 minute lessons around work or school, and pay once.

Who writes the lessons. Every lesson is written by someone who runs digital marketing for two national brands.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose a TAFE or RTO course if you need a qualification on the national register, want a VET Student Loan, qualify for a subsidy, or want a teacher and a timetable.
  • Choose 20 Minute Marketing if you want current platform skills and a portfolio, need to fit study around a job, and want a low one off price.
  • Do both if you want the qualification and the hands on platform practice. Nothing stops you studying a diploma and one of our short courses at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this course accredited?

No, and that's a deliberate choice. 20 Minute Marketing is not a registered training organisation, and our courses are not nationally recognised training.

Accreditation adds cost, and that cost would put practical digital marketing education out of reach for many people, especially young people starting out. It is also slow. The national Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication hasn't been updated since October 2020, while Google, Meta and the AI tools change every few months. We update our lessons when the platforms change, and every lesson is written by someone who runs digital marketing for two national brands.

If you need a qualification on the national register, a TAFE or RTO course is the right choice. If you want current, practical skills, a portfolio you can show an employer or client, and a Certificate of Completion, you're in the right place. Many learners also collect free certificates from Google and HubSpot alongside our courses.

Is a digital marketing diploma worth it?

It is worth it if you need a recognised qualification, can get a subsidy or a VET Student Loan, or want scheduled classes. It is less useful if your main goal is current, hands on platform skills, because none of the five core units of the Diploma of Marketing and Communication covers a digital channel. Read more in why accredited courses lag the platforms.

Is TAFE cheaper than 20 Minute Marketing?

It can be close. A concession student at North Metropolitan TAFE pays $634.90 for the Certificate IV core units, compared with $499 for our Essentials course. Full fee diplomas we checked cost $3,350 to $8,760. Your price depends on your state and eligibility.

Can I use a VET Student Loan for 20 Minute Marketing?

No. VET Student Loans are only for approved courses from approved providers, and our courses are not accredited. Our courses are paid once, from $79 for a short course to $999 for Expert.

Can I study a TAFE course and 20 Minute Marketing together?

Yes. Some learners do a qualification for the credential and one of our short courses for extra practice on a specific platform, such as Google Ads or SEO.
